SAMSPA is seeking a seasonal full-time groundskeeper April through September starting in 2022, to oversee the care of the SAMSPA ball fields and complex. This includes all aspects of groundskeeping for the different surfaces, as well as general maintenance for the complex; includes fence repairs, upkeep of buildings, etc.). In this role, your job duties include inspecting the condition of the grass and sand/shale and determining areas that may need to be repaired. You also perform routine maintenance; you reseed and fertilize the grass areas before, during and/or after the season, and ensure the grass is watered and mowed during softball season. Other responsibilities include grooming the sand/shale on the infield by flattening and making the surfaces even before and during games. Occasional weekend work is expected.

This position will report directly to the Board Facility Liaison of SAMSPA and in the absence of a Facility Liaison, will report to the President.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Performs athletic field and grounds maintenance including mowing, aerifying, topdressing, seeding, weeding, sodding, trimming, field painting, irrigation/drainage and turf care, fertilizing; spray chemicals including insecticides, herbicides, soil conditioners and related chemicals.
  • Follows proper safety precautions.
  • Installs and cares for trees and shrubs, proper pruning techniques and tree removal.
  • Performs infield maintenance and repair work of softball fields including, watering infields, repairing bases, pitching mounds, batter’s boxes and transition areas of infield and outfield.
  • Performs tilling, rolling and fertilizing soil; construct new planting areas and maintain high traffic wear areas on athletic fields.
  • Performs maintenance of irrigation system including preventive maintenance, replacement of heads, broken pipes, winterization, and summarization of irrigation system and monitor flow rates of fields.
  • Identifies equipment needs for each assigned project; organize work methods and procedures, purchases equipment and supplies as required; ensure that the proper materials are available.
  • Follows operational procedures to optimally maintain the playing surfaces of the fields.
  • Picks up, removes, and empties trash and recycling containers; includes any liquid kitchen waste (i.e., cooking grease).
  • Adds, removes, and repairs advertisements and signage.
  • Performs routine maintenance on power equipment, small motors, batting cages, lights, ball diamond fences and other equipment around the SAMSPA complex.
  • Orders fuel for and maintains diesel generator.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will have the following Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to operate various types of power equipment including tractors, lawnmowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, and other landscaping/small motor equipment.
  • Ability to use hand tools required for landscaping.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete assignments.
  • Extensive knowledge of landscaping techniques and processes.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Maintains a valid driver’s license
  • Ability for prolonged periods walking, standing, bending, stretching, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, or kneeling.
  • Must be physically able to operate power equipment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience, including diamond grooming, landscaping and field maintenance, an asset.
  • On-the-job training offered.
